Why you should avoid custom mobile app development for business

Gartner estimates that by 2019 there will be 2,1 billion mobile phones in the world. Add to this the plethora of other mobile devices such as laptops and tablets and it becomes eminently clear why there is so much buzz surrounding enterprise mobile app development, both on and offline.

Despite this, many companies lack clear direction as to how to develop their mobile apps. In this blog take a brief look at why Mumba Cloud's SaaS mobility solution is a better choice when compared to custom mobile app development performed by either an in-house or outsource development teams.

Custom mobile app development usually occurs when the business is seeking a mobility solution that has requirements outside the capabilities of existing systems.

The off the shelf app is considered as the first and best option due to the perceived simplicity and cost. But like many simple solutions, things aren’t always as they seem. With many businesses having customised systems and processes, the one size fits all approach often fails dismally in that it does not adapt to specific business requirements.

Other issues associated with off the shelf ‘solutions’ include difficulties experienced by staff to download, login, and understand these mobile apps, thereby requiring expensive and highly disruptive training procedures (or simply a lack of adoption and usage).

In addition, many on-premise and legacy systems require a major system upgrade, with a high cost tag, in order for a new app to be utilised and even then there is no guarantee that the app will suite the business requirements.

In-house development teams are next to be called upon when it has been determined that a custom app is required to suit the business purposes. Enterprise app development is however a highly complex and relatively new area of IT with specialist developers in this genre being in short supply - to the extent that Gartner believes that by 2017 demand for internal mobile apps will outstrip supply by a ratio of 5 to 1.

Even where mobile app developers are available they come at considerable cost and often require immense resources to not only develop new apps, but continuously update and maintain existing apps when new phone and operating systems are updated throughout the year, thus exacerbating delays and costs even further.

Outsourced custom development is, until Mumba Cloud’s arrival, the only alternative solution when in-house teams don’t exist or have capacity.

Outsource teams often comprise hybrid developers with different skill sets that may not necessarily include experience for developing secure enterprise apps, leading to project delays and technical issues around data privacy, speed and app usability. Most importantly however, custom app projects are transferred to the client upon delivery leaving the ongoing expenses and risks in managing, upgrading and solving technical issues to the internal IT team. This scenario is absolutely disastrous as even the most skilled engineers would struggle to decipher another developers code. Mumba Cloud recently spent time with a prospect (since a client) who was quoted the same amount of money to upgrade the app to the current iOS version as it was to first develop the app.

Mumba Cloud’s SaaS mobility solution addresses these issues and has already proven to be the optimal solution for companies seeking a high quality, custom mobile app that is secure and cost effective.

The Mumba Cloud app is comprised of pre-built modules that are easily configured and customised to any multitude of business processes thereby delivering a perfect solution in record time.

By providing our solution as a managed and hosted service (SaaS), Mumba Cloud reduces the risks and costs associated with ongoing maintenance and upgrades throughout the year. Mumba Cloud licenses are backed by our customer support so that your employees can contact us via phone, email or live chat to resolve issues such as reporting a problem, help with forgotten passwords or to ask usability questions. This reduces support costs within your business and ensures employees achieve a speedy resolution.

Further to employee support, our Enterprise SLA ensures direct accountability with technical issues being dealt with by our professional team in a timely and efficient manner.

It’s also great to know that your company can begin its crucial journey towards optimal enterprise mobility the moment you contact us.
